How to Make a Wire Moss Flower Basket

  1. Secure pan to bottom of wire basket.
  2. Line edge of bottom of basket with moss 4″ up. Add soil and lightly fertilize. Press soil down and towards sides of wire basket.
  3. Line basket again with moss up to 1/3 from bottom. Add soil and lightly fertilize. Press down and towards sides of wire basket.
    Add any of the following plants (approx. 8 – 10):
    Napeta, Schzanthus, Lamium maculabum, Petunia, Vining Verbena, Impatiens, Trailing Lobelia, Ivy Geranium, Bacopa, Lotus Vine, etc.
  4. Push the plants through the wire carefully. (Make sure roots will be in soil.) Then cover lightly with soil just enough to cover them. Now add moss again around the sides up to 2/3 up the wire basket. Add soil and lightly fertilize. Press down.
    Add any of the following plants (approx. 8 – 10):
    Alysum, Schzanthus, Fibrous Begonia, Phlox, Impatiens, Marigold, Compact Lobelia, Nemesia, Petunia, Impatiens, Heliotrope
  5. Push the plants through the wire and cover lightly with soil. Add moss up to and above top of wire basket. Add soil and fertilize lightly. Add a plastic collar to act as a reservoir when watering.
  6. Plant a Geranium in the top and 4 plants. i.e. Alysum and Impatiens, or Marigolds and Alysum, etc. or your choice.
  7. Attach a wire hanger.
  • Each time you fertilize, mix it in. Use Osmocote (14-14-14), Bone Meal and ground limestone. The above basket is a sun basket – if your basket will be hanging in the shade you must use
  • Impatiens or Fibrous Begonias or Fushias with trailing Lobelia, Napeta, Lotus Vine, etc..
  • Pans and collars can be easily made by cutting the bottom from a 5gal plastic pail. A collar comes easily from cutting a 2″ ring from the top of the bucket.
  • Soil should be sterilized and suitable for potting as in prepared mixes. Peat-lite mixes are also excellent for baskets. It is advisable to add a wetting agent to the mix. These are readily available at your local garden supply store.
  • Watering must be at least daily in sunny locations. A drip system will save time and ensure success.
